What is Mama Health Consultancy & Community Services Program Co. Ltd?
Mama Health Consultancy & Community Services Program Co. Ltd is a rural, community-based program in Eastern Central Uganda working to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. We empower communities to take responsibility for maternal and newborn health while complementing the Ministry of Health.
Where does Mama Health operate?
We operate in the Busoga region of Eastern & Central Uganda, covering seven predominantly rural districts (90% rural): Jinja, Kamuli, Iganga, Kaliro, Namutumba, Mayuge, and Bugiri.
Why is there a need for this program in Busoga?
The Busoga region has one of the highest fertility rates in Uganda (7.2). While 93% of women attend antenatal care, only 56% deliver with skilled attendants, and 26% receive postpartum care. Rural skilled delivery rates are just 37% (UDHS 2006). Many women attend antenatal care late, missing critical care opportunities, with only 45% completing four visits.
What health challenges do pregnant women face in Busoga?
Many women face anemia and iron deficiency, with 50% of pregnant women anemic (FANTA 2010) and 88% iron deficient (UDHS 2006). These challenges often begin in girlhood due to poor nutrition, contributing to poor maternal health outcomes.
What does Mama Health do to address these challenges?
Educates and mobilizes communities on early antenatal care, skilled delivery, and postpartum care.
Supports health facilities through training, capacity building, and task-shifting to improve care quality.
Runs school-based programs to promote iron-rich food consumption to reduce iron deficiency.
Trains young graduates as volunteer field officers to promote safe motherhood within communities.
What is the goal of Mama Health?
To contribute to safe motherhood through responsive community-based action, ensuring that no woman, foetus, or baby dies during pregnancy or delivery.
How does Mama Health work with communities?
We collaborate with village health teams, faith-based institutions, and community health workers, supporting them to deliver education, identify and follow up with pregnant women, and strengthen community participation in maternal and newborn health.
